2022 Summer Pulse: NYC Feeling All Kinds of Trippy, New Restaurant Openings, MAJOR e-Commerce Reset!

2022 Summer Pulse: NYC Feeling All Kinds of Trippy, New Restaurant Openings, MAJOR e-Commerce Reset!
Good Morning & Happy Friday!
  • This past week provided a great preview of the summer. Especially loved the trippy music events happening all around NYC, from the LES where the Abracadabra Trip bus, helmed by the amazing Laura Newman, entertained the crowds outside of the New Museum, to Central Park where the Robot Heart Foundation’s Fare Forward played for a ginormous burner crowd (#2 below).
  • Also exciting to see so many new restaurants opening on the Bowery. Two worth noting: Belse (plant based), opens next week, and it looks beautiful; and Ainslie, in the old Vandals space, scheduled to open late-Spring. But most exciting is Gjelina (out of LA) opening on Bond St. later this summer (#3).
  • And finally, keep an eye out for the dreaded e-commerce reset. Already happening among once high-flying pandemic-brands – and, of course, accompanied by a string of layoffs (#10).

Top 10: We have to start with Lila Downs. One of the best performers of our time!

Top 10: We have to start with Lila Downs. One of the best performers of our time!
Good morning & hello Friday!
  • Back from my travels. And I must say I do miss waking up in a hotel, breakfasting with fellow travelers, and planning daily adventures with the “insidery” input of restaurant/hotel staff. [Btw, I may only be traveling domestically for the foreseeable future based on the treacly pace of Immigration’s green card renewals! Never in the past, has “10-year green card renewal” meant it might actually take them 10-years to get around to issuing cards.]
  • But not all is bleak. This week I also got to see the extraordinary Lila Downs (pic lower left) perform at Sony Hall. OMG!!!! So amazing. I have videos from the show in the blog with additional videos posted on my YouTube channel. Without a doubt, one of the best live performers of our time!
  • And with that, please scroll down for more on Lila, the emergence of old skool rollerskating (pic upper left), and the soon-to-open Nine Orchard Hotel (pic, right above), a fabulous new addition to my neighborhood!

10 Best: Andrew Schulz on How to Get More Eyeballs, NFTs So Gimmicky Now, Birria Tacos a Top-5 Trend…
  • Tough week in NYC (too much crime and recently hitting too close to home). Trying to stay optimistic but these progressive, deadbeat politicians who care more about criminals than they do law-abiding citizens (especially women) are really getting me down. But enough of that. My rant will not make it one iota better and it’s not what this blog is about.
  • Let’s talk about the Super Bowl instead. Great game. Weird ads. Spectacular halftime show — even if it was a “nostalgia play” according to Andrew Schulz and his Flagrant2 crew (#1, 2 and 3 below).
  • NFTs are also evolving – becoming more like VIP or membership cards. Kind of gimmicky (#5).
  • And if fashion is your thing, make sure you check out the video from my 6397 shopping experience (in the Wrap).

10 Best: Fave Super Bowl Ad, Stella Ishii’s New 6397 Collection, Wayan’s Liwetan Dinner…
  • Very social week, including a wedding! Congrats again, Richard and Jourdan!
  • Lots of fabulous dinners, esp., loved Wayan’s Liwetan celebration (#2, 7).
  • Also check out this week’s fashion discoveries (#3, 4) and make sure you scroll down to the Wrap for info on Patrick Church’s “Super Gay” SS2022 photo shoot.
  • And for my real estate investor friends, check out #10. The buzz on Workforce Housing is building. It’s similar to affordable housing (but also different and I think it’s more than just semantics). I know everyone is obsessed with luxury condos but that’s like saying we’re only going to develop LVMH-style luxury retail, when we know Target and Walmart are crushing it!

10 Best Finds of the Week: Swanky Nightlife, Travel Update!

10 Best Finds of the Week: Swanky Nightlife, Travel Update!
  • Nightlife is ramping up again in NYC and across the country. Fabulous Lunar New Year celebrations at Ludlow House on Tuesday. Followed by a jam-packed Peasant on Wednesday. Big shout out to Marc and Cara, and the whole staff, for providing such an outstanding dinner and cocktail experience for us (#1, 2 below).
  • Stepping up my travel game (at last). So many jaunts around the country to look forward to over the next few months (#1, 3, 4).
  • And while I’m sure many consider it premature, I do love how Denmark is handling Covid in their country. Hopefully we’ll get to that point soon (#10).

10 Best Finds of the Week with a Focus on Social-First Creativity, Fashion, and Fun Eats

10 Best Finds of the Week with a Focus on Social-First Creativity, Fashion, and Fun Eats
Good Morning and Hello Friday!

So many great finds for the blog this week. Especially love what Helene Heath is doing for Jenni Kayne (#4). Also recently discovered Emma Turner’s food blog, Blistered Peppers. Again, excellent. (#3).

On the food front, a new crop of speakeasies coming on the scene. The Sparrow Room, a dim sum/mahjong parlor mash up in Arlington, sounds especially fun. Boozy ice creams are also worth checking out. (#6 and 7)

And if you’re in need of some chuckles, check out Erik Griffin’s WORST movie reviews. This week’s is OLD by M. Night Shyamalan. Cracked me up. (#10)

Sadly, in the midst of all this creativity, especially on social, I feel like such a loser. People are doing such great things on various platforms and all I’m doing is watching tutorial after tutorial, getting a huge headache in the process. For more on this, check out my video (#1 below).

10 Best Things To Check Out This Week: Entertainment, Art, Real Estate, Wildlife

10 Best Things To Check Out This Week: Entertainment, Art, Real Estate, Wildlife
Good Morning and Hello 2022!

Big emphasis this week on entertainment and the arts. Highlights include the start of Oklahoma‘s National Tour (the stunning Daniel Fish adaptation). Also very excited about Brad’s upcoming museum shows in Arizona, one at SMoCA, the other at the Tucson Museum of Art. I’ll be checking out both in April, along with the Maricopa County Fair (#2 and 6 below).

And then there’s real estate. Am I the only one who foresees the potential for a “shake up the industry” partnership between Adam Neumann (founder of We Work) and Moishe Mana as they both gobble up heaps of real estate in Miami? See #10 below.

Friday Roundup: Festive Holiday Parties + Whipshots + MrBeast + Violette_Fr Review +

Friday Roundup: Festive Holiday Parties + Whipshots + MrBeast + Violette_Fr Review +
Good Morning and hello friday

Exhausted, but in the very best way. This week’s Holiday Party at Ludlow House was the first time in 2 years that I got a sizable group of friends together for a celebration. I was nervous going in – would people show up? Also, I hadn’t hosted this-size party at Ludlow House before. Would they come through on all the details, decor, etc? I needn’t have worried. Panos Kourakos, the GM, and the whole Ludlow Team nailed it. Not only was it a beautiful event, the vibe was absolutely spot on. I was also pleasantly surprised to discover how many new friendships had been forged over the course of the pandemic, e.g., I met neighbors Sierra and Stephen early in the pandemic while we were both hanging out/drinking wine, on our buildings’ abutting fire escapes. Our friendship flourished via Instagram over the next 2 years while they temporarily decamped to Colorado. They’re now back (living in Brooklyn), and I finally got to meet them in person at the party. Another new friendship sprouted on the MET rooftop where I met Maryline. We’ve similarly become Instragram friends and met socially for the first time at Tuesday’s holiday party. That kind of easy, serendipitous way of meeting like-minded people is one of the things I find most exciting about living in NYC.

I’m also trying something new on the video today. Am attempting to provide more in-depth info so that you don’t necessarily need to read as much. I need to perfect it but I am inspired by my favorite podcasters who are all so good at casually entertaining and informing. That is one of my goals for 2022 – to up my game when it comes to communicating thru video. I want the videos to be conversational, fun, and insightful.
