Friday Roundup: It’s Christmas Eve! Happy Holidays Everyone!

Friday Roundup: It’s Christmas Eve! Happy Holidays Everyone!
Good Morning & Hello Friday.

It was Omicron’s week! I’m pretty sure we’re ALL going to get it. But the good news is, those who are vaccinated and boosted seem to have very mild symptoms (at least the people I know). Jim Cramer of CNBC, who got Covid this week, and Scott Morrison (PM of Australia), both talked about how we’re now at a point where we have to learn to live with Covid as an endemic. And that means assuming a certain degree of risk. More people are getting on board with that line of thinking based on what I’m picking up from mayors and governors around the country. I’m not hearing anyone (even in the most Democratic parts of the country) pushing for additional mandated shutdowns (see #1, 2, and 3 below).

It was also TikTok’s week. Besides topping Google as the most visited website in 2021, TikTok is also in the process of opening 300 ghost kitchens (delivery only) offering some of the top food hits from the platform, e.g., baked feta pasta or smash burgers (#7).

Next week, I’ll be doing a best/worst of 2021 with predictions for 2022. This is last year’s. I was wrong about a few things but spot-on about others, e.g., I did not buy into all that nonsense about ‘we’re all going to be baking bread and never returning to restaurants.’ Of the 5 things I wished for personally for 2021, 3 came to pass but I failed to make it to another State Fair or go on another Nat Geo trip. But it’s looking good for both for 2022!

And just a heads up on the vibe this week, I’m covering some topics that are a little more serious and gloomy than what I normally write about. But that’s what’s on my radar as we close out the year.

Top 10: We’re Rebounding And Yet People Are On Edge

Top 10: We’re Rebounding And Yet People Are On Edge
EVERYONE is starting to get vaccinated and it feels so good!
  • As of Monday, March 8, more than 90.3 million vaccine doses had been administered in the United States. More than 58.8 million people have received one dose, and nearly 30.6 million have received two. It’s creating a new sense of hopefulness. (Source: Patch)
  • But there are two issues that are devastating the country that nobody seems capable of handling or even wanting to make a priority (see #10 below). The boom times that we all sense are in the offing will not happen if these two major problems aren’t addressed and resolved ASAP.
And on that note, scroll down for this week’s Top 10.

My Top 10 List: Big Week Ahead For Vaccines and Return to Work

My Top 10 List: Big Week Ahead For Vaccines and Return to Work

Hopefully, only one more week of high political drama before we get back to some degree of normalcy (and civility).

  • While the fever broke last week, we are clearly not out of the woods yet. Businesses around the country, e.g., in Pittsburgh and Austin, are boarding up their storefronts again in preparation for one more round of craziness as we head into inauguration week.
  • Fortunately, there are also signs (finally) that even the most ardent proponents of the lockdown are waking up to the fact that it’s not working (see #2 below).
  • I’m also detecting a shift back to the office. Men, in particular, are chomping at the bit to get out of the house and return to a traditional work environment (see Harvard study below, #3, not good news for women, btw).

Finally! Something Fantastic To Look Forward To!

Finally! Something Fantastic To Look Forward To!

Two things happened this week that brightened my world. Both are still somewhat tentative but definitely indicate there is light at the end of the tunnel.

First and foremost

“You can see the therapeutic (remdesivir) benefit faster than the protective (vaccine) benefit. I think there’s a good chance we’ll have substantial death rate reduction by the end of the year with the combination of those new tools.”

Bill Gates on CNBC
and then, this!

HI Irma –

Nat Geo reached out and wants to ‘give you the 1st opportunity’ to join the new departure for The Future of Everything: Exploring Global Innovation by Private Jet Trip. It’s from August 21st– September 13 of 2021. The itinerary is planned to be the same –there are minor changes with the instructors but the destinations, hotels, etc remain the same. Let me know if you are interested.”

BEST news I’ve heard in a long while. Of course I replied YES YES YES to Pablo at Continental Travel!

Happiness In The Time Of COVID. Is It Even Possible?

Happiness In The Time Of COVID. Is It Even Possible?

Well, YES, it is possible to train yourself to be happy and have peace of mind even in times of great stress! And I must thank Naval Ravikant for being such an inspiring guest on Joe Rogan’s podcast in which he shared simple happiness hacks that have positively impacted his life over the last 8 years. I’ve now listened to his podcast 3 times and get something new out of it each time. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

hacks to happiness

Naval believes happiness is a choice. A choice that remains elusive for most of us until we “uncondition” ourselves from the negative thoughts that linger in our minds longer than positive thoughts do.

He also talks about the simple ways all of us can hack our way to happiness:

  • get more sunlight
  • spend more time in nature
  • smile more
  • hug more
  • stay fit
  • watch your mind and avoid negative thoughts

Let me add the most important thing I’ve done to regain peace of mind: cut out TV viewing. I haven’t turned on the TV in over a month. I keep up with the news online, it’s still stressful but I can be more selective about how much negativity I let into my life.

Lockdown Diaries: Pivoting From Fearful To Hopeful

Lockdown Diaries: Pivoting From Fearful To Hopeful

This past weekend felt as though we had been given the green light to move forward with our lives. For the first time in a long while, I saw people out with friends enjoying themselves and spending money where they could.

I’m even pivoting…

This will be the last of the Lockdown Diaries. Come June (next week!), I’m turning my attention to post-lockdown with a little Hindsight 2020 thrown in for good measure.

Lockdown Diaries: One Week Closer To Quasi-Normalcy

Lockdown Diaries: One Week Closer To Quasi-Normalcy

I had my first taste of normalcy this week. It was fleeting but it felt great! Hints of a post-pandemic life are in the air.

A slow RETURN TO NORMALCY

Glorious weather and my renewed Citibike membership kicked off a great weekend zipping around town. And I loved seeing restaurants opening and serving slews of happy diners – al fresco style out on the street, of course. It felt good to be around people. And while many of the protocols we now live with feel alien, it’s the spirit of the people that exudes the normalcy.

My horoscope even signaled un-pause was in my future

This is a time of personal growth and self-discovery that can be quite significant in your psychological development, as well as being positively exciting and interesting.

Lockdown Sucks But Little Things Can Make A Big Difference

Lockdown Sucks But Little Things Can Make A Big Difference

I’ve learned a lot about myself over the last few months. I’m very adaptable and I can find a silver lining in just about anything. I also learned it takes only a few little tweaks to my daily routine to make life way more fun, interesting, and meaningful.

Three things I will definitely keep doing post-lockdown:
  1. Video chats with friends all over the country. How I’ve not done this before is baffling.
  2. Cooking and eating at home. Dinner parties will definitely be front and center going forward.
  3. Virtual workouts. Over the last two months, I have gotten fitter, stronger, and healthier – all due to the trainers and exercise routines I found online.
