Snapshot of America: Nashville! Wowza!! Is Anyplace More Fun?

Snapshot of America: Nashville! Wowza!! Is Anyplace More Fun?
Good Morning & Hello Friday!!
  • Spent a long weekend in Nashville with a big group of friends to celebrate another LEO birthday. It was FABULOUS.
  • I hadn’t been to Nashville since 2014 (link here). Back then, I came for trend scouting gigs. Loved it then, love it even more now.
  • Nashville has changed a lot. It’s got a Soho House now (with 7000 people on the wait list I heard). More people have moved here, and it’s gotten more touristy (but not in a bad way).
  • From my vantage point, Nashville in veering away from its hipster cool cred, has become way more vibrant and way more fun!

And with that, please scroll down for Top 10 Things To Do/See in Nashville.

Top 10: Best Trend Sources, Tips, Scoops of the Week

Top 10: Best Trend Sources, Tips, Scoops of the Week
Good Morning & Hello Friday!
  • A bit rushed this week. Squeezing two days of writing into one.
  • Arrived in Nashville yesterday afternoon. Sweltering here and today we are expecting torrential thunderstorms. Staying at Soho House which is always super nice to have as a home base while traveling. Btw, Travel & Leisure just included Nashville among America’s “Best 15 Cities to Visit.” Look for my SNAPSHOT OF AMERICA: NASHVILLE post next week.
  • The focus of this week’s blog is entertainment (#1, 2, 3), business (#5, 6), and travel (#9, 10).
  • Also 2 big recommendations: Elliott Choy’s YouTube channel (#1) and the Wolf Street Report (#6). I’ve followed Elliott for a while, always impressed by how smart, focused, and down-to-earth he is. The Wolf Report is newer to me – been a subscriber to the free version for several months. Along with Axios, these are two of my best sources of biz info.

Please scroll down for this week’s “rushed” Top 10.

Snapshot of America: Los Angeles! Used to LOVE this city, less of a fan now. It’s a hot mess!

Snapshot of America: Los Angeles! Used to LOVE this city, less of a fan now. It’s a hot mess!
Good Morning & Hello Friday!
  • TRAVEL IS BACK BIG TIME. And logistics are key (as I discovered after my abysmal experience at AUS). Since then, I signed up for CLEAR (#1), I always Uber (#2), and I NEVER EVER check luggage!
  • Let’s get right to it. LA has always been one of my favorite cities. It’s where I’d routinely spend several months a year doing trend work while staying at The Standard WeHo (my second home, Room 135). This time around, my first visit in 4 years, I found many bright spots (# 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 below) but I’ve struggled to stay positive about the overall direction of the city.
  • The most daunting issue is homelessness and the now common sight of encampments and utterly scary street people (#10). On my last day in LA, I had to go to Brentview Urgent Care (#5, long story). At 9 am, everyone in the waiting room was jolted from their seats by loud, animalistic howling noises coming from the street. Eventually, we saw a young woman, still howling, but now bashing her head furiously against the metal garbage container. I asked if we could lock the door. The receptionist said they are not allowed to do that…..
  • Downtown, which I had previously had such high hopes for, is a lost cause. Why companies are still bothering to build out these gorgeous stores and hotels is beyond me. They must know their customers will flee the moment they have their first encounter with a sidewalk defecator (pants-down-around-their-ankles doing their business outside of the new Apple Store or the Proper Hotel).
  • And finally, I’m so done with driving and all this crazy traffic. I like walkable cities and LA is anything but, e.g., I love gallery hopping, but only got to visit one gallery in LA (Jeffrey Deitch) because it would have taken me 30 minutes to drive from one gallery to the next and that puts an entirely new spin on “gallery crawl.”

But all that said, my hotel experience in LA (# 4) was amazing. I spent the entire last day ensconced at “my” table with friends joining me for lunch and dinner. I met other guests, chitchatted with the staff, and just had an awesome time.

I apologize to all my LA friends for speaking negatively about your city – I’m sure people have similar things to say about NYC. It might just be a case of the “devil you know vs. the devil you don’t.” But seeing one of my once favorite cities deteriorate like this makes me sad.

And on that note, if you have any appetite left for travel tips and recommendations, please scroll down. I promise it’s not all doom and gloom.

Top 10: Bozeman’s Cool LARK Hotel, NYC’s New Tin Building, and Elon’s Way ANTI-Remote!
Good Morning & Hello Friday!
  • Compared to last week, I am once again in good spirits (as I discuss in the wrap up video – #10). I don’t know who to thank for this ability to “move on” when things get me down but it is one of my best traits.
  • Also, thrilled to be traveling again (even though it’s all domestic). Have trips planned for later this month to LA, Nashville in July, and Bozeman, Montana (at a super cool hotel) for my birthday in August. (#1, 2).
  • And HUGE gratitude to Dr. David Middaugh of El Paso Manual Physical Therapy for providing the most helpful exercises for hip arthritis. I’m back to walking 20K steps (7 miles) a day. It’s pretty amazing (#9).

Please scroll down for this week’s Top 10 (#5 will undoubtedly be controversial but bear with me)!!

Good Morning & Hello Friday!!
  • This week was way more action packed than usual. So many new restaurants and bars to check out and getting myself back out to Brooklyn was major. I have to thank both Laser Wolf and the soon-to-open Google Store for providing the impetus. (#3, 4, 7)
  • Major week for Brad as well. His new show just opened in Chelsea at Garth Greenan (his new gallery). He’s had an absolutely stellar year with 2 big museum openings and now the show in Chelsea! (#10).
  • The biggest news of the week for me, however, was finally cancelling the Faroe Islands trip. Sad to do it but at least I’m no longer stressed by USCIS’ interminable delays in issuing green card renewals. And I did get a full credit (albeit not a refund). But I am happy with the outcome. I’m already planning several domestic cultural tourism adventures! And, btw, for anyone needing to renew their passport, please prepare yourself for some major backlogs. This is an informative article on just how dire the situation has become, even for Americans.

Please scroll down for this week’s Top 10. Enjoy!

Top 10: We have to start with Lila Downs. One of the best performers of our time!

Top 10: We have to start with Lila Downs. One of the best performers of our time!
Good morning & hello Friday!
  • Back from my travels. And I must say I do miss waking up in a hotel, breakfasting with fellow travelers, and planning daily adventures with the “insidery” input of restaurant/hotel staff. [Btw, I may only be traveling domestically for the foreseeable future based on the treacly pace of Immigration’s green card renewals! Never in the past, has “10-year green card renewal” meant it might actually take them 10-years to get around to issuing cards.]
  • But not all is bleak. This week I also got to see the extraordinary Lila Downs (pic lower left) perform at Sony Hall. OMG!!!! So amazing. I have videos from the show in the blog with additional videos posted on my YouTube channel. Without a doubt, one of the best live performers of our time!
  • And with that, please scroll down for more on Lila, the emergence of old skool rollerskating (pic upper left), and the soon-to-open Nine Orchard Hotel (pic, right above), a fabulous new addition to my neighborhood!

Snapshot of America: VEGAS! From The Strip to DTLV to Downtown Summerlin!!

Snapshot of America: VEGAS! From The Strip to DTLV to Downtown Summerlin!!
Good Morning & Hello Friday!

My April travels are winding down and I am thrilled to have finally gotten my travel mojo back.

Also thrilled to have discovered a new “Happy Place” in this town. It used to be the Cosmopolitan, but now it is Fergusons in DTLV, most especially the Mothership. This coffee shop hangout is where I spent all day yesterday writing, while observing what a mecca the Mothership has turned out to be – especially for creative, cool locals.

I also want to do a shout-out to Nicole at Primrose (Park MGM). She turned me on to both the Arts District and Downtown Summerlin.

Also big thanks to Cherie for the recommendation to see the Neon Museum at sunset and to Jo Russ for arranging the tickets. And, finally, to Charlotte Dutoit for the tip on The Mothership. Super grateful to all of you!

If Vegas is of interest and you are planning a trip this year, scroll down for tips and recommendations based on my adventures this week.
