Top 10: Creativity, Tech, and the Korean Wave (Hallyu)!
Good Morning & Hello Friday!
  • Great week (with the sole exception of STILL no Green Card Renewal). However, I’ve been extremely lucky when it comes to random run-ins with all things creative and cool — people, places, events. It’s almost as though the universe is trying to make amends for the way they’ve let the green card situation play out.
  • My best discoveries this week range from the K-Pop Random Dance Challenge (#5), Eitan Baron’s CapitalistMan Performance Pop-Up (#4), and John Crist’s driverless Waymo (#3) – that’s an absolute must-watch!
  • I also have another trip booked. Heading to Nashville in July!! Big birthday celebration for one of my besties.

And with that, please scroll down and enjoy this week’s Top 10.

Top 10: We have to start with Lila Downs. One of the best performers of our time!

Top 10: We have to start with Lila Downs. One of the best performers of our time!
Good morning & hello Friday!
  • Back from my travels. And I must say I do miss waking up in a hotel, breakfasting with fellow travelers, and planning daily adventures with the “insidery” input of restaurant/hotel staff. [Btw, I may only be traveling domestically for the foreseeable future based on the treacly pace of Immigration’s green card renewals! Never in the past, has “10-year green card renewal” meant it might actually take them 10-years to get around to issuing cards.]
  • But not all is bleak. This week I also got to see the extraordinary Lila Downs (pic lower left) perform at Sony Hall. OMG!!!! So amazing. I have videos from the show in the blog with additional videos posted on my YouTube channel. Without a doubt, one of the best live performers of our time!
  • And with that, please scroll down for more on Lila, the emergence of old skool rollerskating (pic upper left), and the soon-to-open Nine Orchard Hotel (pic, right above), a fabulous new addition to my neighborhood!

Snapshot of America: VEGAS! From The Strip to DTLV to Downtown Summerlin!!

Snapshot of America: VEGAS! From The Strip to DTLV to Downtown Summerlin!!
Good Morning & Hello Friday!

My April travels are winding down and I am thrilled to have finally gotten my travel mojo back.

Also thrilled to have discovered a new “Happy Place” in this town. It used to be the Cosmopolitan, but now it is Fergusons in DTLV, most especially the Mothership. This coffee shop hangout is where I spent all day yesterday writing, while observing what a mecca the Mothership has turned out to be – especially for creative, cool locals.

I also want to do a shout-out to Nicole at Primrose (Park MGM). She turned me on to both the Arts District and Downtown Summerlin.

Also big thanks to Cherie for the recommendation to see the Neon Museum at sunset and to Jo Russ for arranging the tickets. And, finally, to Charlotte Dutoit for the tip on The Mothership. Super grateful to all of you!

If Vegas is of interest and you are planning a trip this year, scroll down for tips and recommendations based on my adventures this week.

Snapshot of America: Phoenix & Tucson

Snapshot of America: Phoenix & Tucson
Good Morning & Hello Tuesday!!!

Have been in AZ for almost a week, happily ensconced at one of my all-time favorite hotels. And must express my gratitude to all the people I’ve met and connected with over the last week – so friendly and welcoming! Much appreciated.

Phoenix is not new to me. I’ve been here numerous times but it has certainly changed over the last few years. This is my first time back since the start of the Phoenix boom (Phoenix was the fastest-growing big city in the U.S. between 2010 and 2020).

This trip was planned to coincide with Brad’s recent museum exhibitions (#10 below). But my itinerary was also chock-a-block with new things to check out including emerging neighborhoods and trendy new scenes, e.g., coffee and car events which are all the rage in Phoenix.

The only downside has been the heat (which absolutely does not agree with me) and I am also not a fan of having to do so much driving (odd, I know, since I LOVE car culture!).

Scroll down for highlights and best tips and recommendations should any of you be planning to travel to AZ later this year.

NO POST TODAY. Look for Phoenix/Tucson Snapshot next Tuesday!

NO POST TODAY. Look for Phoenix/Tucson Snapshot next Tuesday!
Good Morning & Hello Friday!

Arrived in AZ on Wednesday. Staying at the Hotel Valley Ho which I love! What I can’t get over is how ridiculously hot it is (heatstroke weather for me). And how much traffic there is on the roads. It’s also my first time renting a car and driving myself places in over two years – thank God for muscle memory – yikes!!

But I did want to check in with you because I love the Friday morning exchanges I have with so many of you (always gets my day off to such a great start). And I wanted to remind you to keep an eye out for ZandlSlant next Tuesday when I’ll be covering my AZ discoveries/must-sees, e.g., all the new downtown Phoenix restaurants and bars, the boom in luxury retail (so many stores at Scottsdale Fashion Square have adopted a velvet rope entry strategy), the coffee shop car scene, and much more. My itinerary is a mile long. Ultimately, I’ll be sharing my overall impressions of AZ and how it’s changed to become one of the four fastest-growing states in the country.

PS: Pics above are with Brad at his show in Tucson (which is spectacular) and from the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix (where I almost got heatstroke on Wednesday afternoon but was so obsessed to see it all, I headed back early the next day to visit in a more doable 70 degrees).

Top 10: Starting with Travel which went from Great to Total Chaos!

Top 10: Starting with Travel which went from Great to Total Chaos!
Good Morning and Hello Friday!!
  • My big news this week is that after two years of NOT traveling, I survived my first trip. As a matter of fact, I thoroughly enjoyed it (despite the Austin airport fiasco).
  • I also got a big lesson on the importance of getting to the airport ridiculously early. Plus, the need for Global Entry (which I can’t do until my 10-year Green Card Renewal comes through). It’s been languishing in USCIS covid-delay-hell for over 13 months. I’ve had to hire an attorney to expedite the process!!
  • This coming week, I am off on Trip #2. Heading to AZ to see Brad’s shows in Scottsdale and Tucson and then heading to Vegas for opening night of Lady Gaga’s “Jazz and Piano” residency.
  • Doubtful I will get to do a SNAPSHOT: PHOENIX next week but look for a surprise post from The Vault (a look-back at what was trending in April 2015 or 2016 perhaps?).
  • And with that, please scroll down for more on what we can anticipate as we all get back to traveling this summer.

Snapshots of America: Austin, TX

Snapshots of America: Austin, TX
Good Morning Y’All

This is the first in my Snapshots of America Series. I’m planning to switch to this format as I start to travel again. Based on your response, I’ll be doing this again twice in April when I’ll be in Phoenix, Tucson, and Las Vegas.

First impressions of Austin?

  • It’s 1000% techie. All that talk about Elon Musk and the rest of Silicon Valley flocking to Austin? It’s FACT and it’s easy to spot the techie “uniform” (they all wear those cool-looking pants made from high-tech performance fabrics – Vuori seems to be a popular brand), they all carry large backpacks, they ride e-scooters, and they often travel, or gather, in packs. Also, almost everyone seems to be from LA or NY. And most tellingly, all the convos going on around me for the last three days have centered on VCs, funding rounds, and start-ups ready for acquisition (also, quite a bit on how to get employees back in the office!).
  • It’s a wealthy city. The area around South Congress (where I always stayed in the past), now reminds me of Soho in its heyday. New Hermes boutique opening right next to Soho House.
  • It’s friendly. Everyone I’ve encountered has been super welcoming, helpful, and so happy to introduce Texas to a newcomer.
  • It’s a cool (but small) scene. It’s a city that attracts young, smart people. And that in turn attracts an older cohort (like me). But besides all the tech happenings, there’s not very much for a visitor to check out. From what I can tell, everything pretty much seems to revolve around the outdoors – everyone’s biking, hiking, kayaking. There is a great food scene (trying to get into Uchi is a challenge, it’s booked a month out). Retail also seems to be thriving. Although people dress casually, the brands they’re wearing are buzzy, e.g., On performance sneakers, Burberry quilted jackets (did not see much Patagonia), Vuitton backpacks, YETI bags, and as I mentioned before, hi-performance fabric pants or shorts!!
  • That said, authentic Texas swagger/style is not going away. And I love it. Thanks to my friend Sheri H., I’ve met so many cool people this week (especially at UT Austin). And big shout out also to Soho House Austin (staff and fellow guests) who have been so welcoming, and so helpful in getting me tapped in to the best things to do and see in their city.

So if you’re curious about Austin, scroll down for my visual snapshot from 3 days in.

NYC Bustling with Tourists! You Asked for Recos. Here Goes. My Best 7-Day Itinerary.

NYC Bustling with Tourists! You Asked for Recos. Here Goes. My Best 7-Day Itinerary.
  • I’ve gotten a lot of requests for recommendations on what to do and see in NYC. I am thrilled to oblige. It is important to point out that my focus is on things and places that appeal equally to visitors and locals. No Statue of Liberty or Empire State Building recos. (#1-8)
  • I’m also including a link to an article on Sam Quinones’ new book about what is really fueling homelessness. It runs counter to the prevailing narrative blaming it all on affordable housing. Instead, he goes deep into the world of meth. Based on my personal encounters with the neighborhood homeless, Quinones book is spot-on. I consider it essential reading. (#10)
  • Next week I’ll be posting from Austin. My first plane trip in over two years!! Wish me luck!!
