LAST CHANCE: Do not miss this stunning Kerry James Marshall show

This is the final weekend to catch this show in NYC. It is up thru Sunday January 29 at the Met Breuer.

For those of you on the West Coast, the show is traveling to LA and will open at the Museum of Contemporary Art on March 12th, running thru July 3, 2017. (It debuted last year at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago – the city the artist calls home.)

The exhibition includes 72 absolutely exquisite paintings (I’ve included more photos at the end of the post). The artist is known for his large-scale narrative history paintings featuring black figures. Make sure you watch the short video interview with him where he talks about the work and his influences.

Read on below for 2 other gallery shows on the Upper East Side that I highly recommend if you’re uptown.

ALMINE RECH GALLERY
John M. Armleder
39 East 78th Street
Til February 23, 2017

This is one of my favorite uptown galleries – originating in Paris, just opened recently in NYC. I am not familiar with the artist, John M. Armleder. He was a co-founder of the Ecart Group (1969) and closely affiliated with the Fluxus movement. His work typically encompasses performance, drawings, sculptures and paintings.

The artist gained international recognition with his Furniture Sculpture series from 1979, bringing together iconic examples of design and paintings to reflect on the trivialization of the artwork as an ornamental accessory.

MICHAEL WERNER GALLERY
Richard Oelze
4 East 77th Street
Til March 11, 2017

Beautiful, very elegant show of works by the German painter Richard Oelze (1900-1980). A reclusive and visionary artist who participated in major international exhibitions of his time, but is now lost to the broader art historical consciousness. This exhibition, with more than thirty paintings and drawings, is a rare opportunity to reconsider one of the forgotten masters of Surrealist painting.

The Michael Werner Gallery is also one of my favorite townhouse gallery spaces.
