Fortune writer Erin Griffith interviews Pinterest CEO Ben Silbermann

Ben Silbermann, speaking at the Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference in Aspen, described Pinterest as a ‘catalog of ideas’ to help people discover and try new things in their lives. That’s exactly how I use the platform – most recently to figure out my new personal style. I’ve also used it for my home, especially for how to decorate with indoor plants.  I don’t use Pinterest consistently – only when I have a project underway.

Pinterest has become one of the internet’s hottest websites, particularly among women, with over 50 billion pins and an estimated 60 million users worldwide.

Men are the fastest growing group on Pinterest – now accounting for 18% of pinners.

Pinterest is making international growth its top priority – 40% of its users are now outside the United States.

The company recently began getting advertising revenue in the form of ‘promoted pins’ and it created a ‘buy button’ but is not getting any revenue at this time from it. Silvermann said it was launched because “people were asking for it for a long time.”  He sees advertising as the ‘primary’ driver of revenue but wants to avoid ‘ugly’ ads which detract from the experience.
