5 out of 5 stars

Phenomenal show – interestingly, Murakami cites Jeff Koons’ Whitney show as his inspiration

Checked out 15 galleries in Chelsea on Black Friday but only came up with 2 shows that I can wholeheartedly recommend: Takashi Murakami at Gagosian and Cameron Gray at Mike Weiss.

TAKASHI MURAKAMI @ GAGOSIAN – 555 West 24th (til 1/17)

ALSO WORTH CHECKING IF YOU’RE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD…..

Franz West @ David Zwirner (537 West 20th) – interesting history here, Franz West is one of only two artists to ever leave Zwirner.  The West departure – to Gagosian – was particularly devastating for Zwirner and this show clearly celebrates a reunion of sorts with many posters from their past shows together prominently featured.

Albert York @ Matthew Marks (522 West 22nd) – gorgeous show of beautiful small paintings – landscapes, portraits, flowers and animals.

Gary Simmons @ Metro Pictures (519 West 24th) – great installation on plywood on the backwall definitely worth a look-see.

Picasso @ Pace (510 West 25th) – Jacqueline paintings – there is just TOO MUCH PICASSO in the city right now.  But if you’re a fan, definitely worth checking out.

Sigmar Polke @ Paul Kasmin – (293 10th Avenue) – exquisite small drawings.  If you’re a fan and didn’t get enough Polke at MOMA, you should check this out.
