Wall Murals: Love Them But Do They Convert To Sales?

EVERYBODY is getting on the wall mural bandwagon. And, of course, some do it better than others. I happen to love the Gucci murals as well as the ones from Rag & Bone but I’m not chomping at the bit to buy anything from either company. My personal preferences aside, the Gucci campaign has been very successful from what I hear.

In a BoF interview with Colossal Media (they do the Gucci walls), fashion is now Colossal’s fastest-growing category. Phone ringing off the hook since Gucci walls started.

Rag & Bone’s Project C.A.T. (Conservation Acres for Tigers) – in partnership with Discovery Communications/World Wildlife Fund.

Houston and Elizabeth Streets

  • This partnership aims to protect and double the wild tiger population, which has dropped by 96% in the last century with only 4,000 left in the wild due to habitat loss and pervasive poaching.
  • Self-taught artist Boy Kong designed the custom Project C.A.T. graphic for a T-shirt and mural collaboration. Inspired by Japanese woodblock prints, graffiti and animal folklore.
  • On-view through August 14th (73 East Houston Street) and the limited edition Project Cat Tee is available ($95.00) from rag-bone.com.

Gucci Décor Mural @Lafayette and Prince

This is Gucci ‘s first interior collection mural. Drawn by illustrator Alex Merry, it features new items such as the porcelain jar containing the fragrance candle, cushions decorated with silk Jacquard’s GG patterns and animal motifs.

Oddfellows Ice Cream Mural (Houston and Mott)

LAME. An example of how everyone is getting on the bandwagon. No artistic relevance and no point of view. Also, no mention of the artist anywhere in their PR materials – a dead giveaway that this is a half-hearted effort.

Bottom Line.

The effectiveness of a mural campaign in stimulating sales, is directly proportional to how predisposed people already are to the brand.

However, a great mural – in the right location – can get a new brand or product on people’s radar. And if it’s really good, and the stars are aligned, it can get people to google the brand, instagram it and ultimately check it out online or IRL.

Wall murals, done right, are that powerful!!
